The Importance Of Back Exercises In Your Bodybuilding Program

January 6th, 2009 by Ricardo d Argence

Increase muscle mass and functional strength are the two reasons of primary importance to get into bodybuilding. Most important in both cases is the development of core strength; the muscles of the abdomen, upper, middle and lower back.

The muscles in your back are primary stabilizing, but can easily be injured when lifting weights. From a biomechanical perspective, your back consists of the spine, the ribs, the scapula and the ligaments that string them all together, like parts of a mobile or kinetic motion structure.

Back injuries are almost always compression or rotation injuries, this is damage to the soft tissue, due to an over-extending movement of the back muscles involved. You can prevent back injuries by utilizing correct weight lifting techniques and muscle group isolation and you can also prevent physical problems from developing years later.

Traps, Lats, and Deltoids are some back muscle groups to work on, but take your time. Doing it slowly will prevent injuries. Sure, you are going to get a ripped back by overworking, but you should concentrate more on everyday strength over getting to big when working your back.

The traps muscles are the ones that form the bulk of your back. If you are looking to do Traps, then use a shrug motion, which has you taking dumbbells in each hand, and shrugging your shoulders up and down while you take a breath and then let them down while exhaling.

Another movement that helps the traps a bit (but mostly works on your deltoids) is a straight-arm lift. Hold a dumbbell in your hand with your elbow at your side, and your forearm out level with the map. Extend your arm until it’s at shoulder height, in one fluid motion, and look down your arm at the dumbbell, like you’re sitting on a pistol range. Then bring it down slowly. This will work on your deltoids and the yoke of muscle linking your shoulders.

To build up the lower trapezius muscle, you’re going to want a sitting down ‘V-bar pull down’, where you’re pulling down against resistance. This is better than a straight pull up because it isolates the muscle thoroughly.

Building definition, and most importantly, strength, in the lower back requires shoulder arches. Hold a light dumb-bell over the back of your neck and lay down on your front. With your hands clasped, arch your back, lift, and hold for a count of three, then lower slowly. Do these sparingly; it’s very easy to overdo them.

As with all muscle building exercises, it’s important to do stretches and a bit of cardio before and after doing them to maintain flexibility.

Why Building Strength Should Be Your Number One Goal

December 31st, 2008 by Caleb Lee

If you are wondering why I concentrate on strength training to a great extent and think you should too in that case this article will tell you why.

Read this article right now to learn several good reasons why I think building strength should be your main goal (even though you just want to build bigger, more robust muscles and melt away loads of fat)…

1. Strength Training Is More Functional:

Ever needed to lift a bit heavy? Move furnishings? Pick your girlfriend up and pin her against the wall for a scorching make out session? All those things required strength, not necessarily muscle size.

Actually, at times having extra muscle is not beneficial - it weighs more as a result if you have to run or walk long distances takes additional calories to sustain, in short you have to eat further…

2. Building Strength Takes Less Time:

Nearly all skilled bodybuilders work hard up to 6 days in the gym and some even do a two times a day workouts. If you’re like me (or most people) in that case lifting weights isn’t your twenty-four-hour job.

You can become super strong training 3-4 days a week, and spend no more than 20-30 minutes in the gym each time - DoubleYourGains’ 3-5 Program takes 30mins/3x week. That means you could be spending 2 hours in the gym vs. 12. It doesn’t take long to develop strength.

3. Building Strength Is Inspiring:

Nearly all people don’t have any goals when they go to the gym, they think “I want to look better” but that’s uncertain and undetermined. Knowing you want to add 5lbs to your deadlift each time you set foot in the gym though is VERY motivating.

What’s more, observing the weights build and seeing how far you’ve developed over the course of time is very motivating and makes you want to keep coming back to the gym.

4. Strength Makes It Simpler To Increase Volume:

Most bodybuilders nowadays don’t realize that guys like Arnold and weightlifters from his day all did powerlifting routines at the beginning of their careers to build high starting levels of strength and power.

They had a unique “dense” look to their physiques from all this heavy weight training. And were able to use heavier weights when it came to doing traditional bodybuilding style set/rep schemes - so it was much easier for these strong lifters to build muscle.

5. Better For Well-being:

There’s been a lot of recent research that shows strength training helps to prevent age related diseases and degenerative diseases.

In short: Losing muscle mass is an unavoidable effect of aging, but strength training in particular will tell your body to “hold on” to muscle mass for it needs it to continue lifting bulky stuff.

And also, your bones will become stronger as well to support your framework of muscle mass.

6. Builds Up Self-Confidence

There’s nothing better than KNOWING you can pick a heavy weight off the floor or press a heavy weight up over your head. Or knowing that you have the strength to pull yourself up and over a wall up and over the edge of a cliff and things like that.

Knowing you are as strong as you look is a main confidence booster.

7. Strength Training Is Great For Sports Activities

Strength is the core for all other physical qualities. Building up your strength boosts your power, explosiveness, speed, agility, endurance, and all that.

Plus, a lot of sports - especially martial arts - require athletes to have high relative strength. They need to be very strong for their size because they have to stay within a certain weight class.

There’s nothing worse than acquiring 20 MORE pounds of muscle you have to carry down the field, or move around the ring to avoid getting knocked out - and that 20 pounds of muscle is not doing you any good.

8. Strength Training Is Great For Women

Most women don’t want to look like the hulk. They don’t want to put on 20 pounds of muscle. They just want to get “toned”. As I mentioned before, strength training is the best way to get the toned look.

So if you’re a lass you can become strong very fast and uplift your health and quality of life without taking away from your feminineness in the least.

Weight Lifting Techniques for Building Muscle Mass

December 28th, 2008 by Geraldine Dimarco

Weight lifting is a power training activity which many people participate in for the purpose of building, strengthening and increasing muscle mass and also for the purpose of losing weight. Before attempting to lift weights, here are some helpful tips that can help you to achieve weight lifting success.

First and foremost, one of the key principles you’ll need to master is what the appropriate weight amount you should be lifting. Know that, if you are not comfortable lifting a weight at least 15 times, you probably have the wrong weight. The best thing you can do is take it slow, lifting a single set of 15 repetitions making sure your weight amount is correct. This will go along way towards you building up strength in a fast and effect manner. If you start out lifting the incorrect weight amount, you will only wind up hurting yourself.

Skipping warm ups is one common mistake made by weight lifters, both beginners and experienced lifters make this mistake. Ten minute warm- ups of stretching or any form of aerobic activity should be done before attempting to lift weights. Warm ups help to decrease the risk of injuries and should not be left off.

Proper form is essential when practicing the correct weight lifting methods. The amount of weights that you use when performing weight lifting techniques should not be to light nor should it be too heavy.

Weights that are too light will not provide sufficient stimulation for muscle building and weights that are too heavy can cause muscle injury. Ensure that you are able to lift your weights at least fifteen times before feeling your muscles getting tired. Learning how to keep the proper form is necessary before you attempt to start lifting.

Rest is a part of the sport. Practicing at the correct weight with good technique and proper form requires that you give your body a chance to rest. Weight lifting is vigorous, and you don’t want to overwork muscles by doing the same thing every day. It is essential that you give your muscles a chance to rest. Vary your routine and work on different muscles for the best result.

Slow down. Learning to use weight lifting methods can be exciting. It is important to remember, however, that rushing only results in poor form and possible injury. When doing repetitions, it is important to take it slow, isolate the muscles and work with your body and not against it.

Practicing all these techniques is a way to pick up a sport and build muscle. If you work out everyday and you aren’t seeing the desired results, you may need to consider your workout strategy. It might not be correct. Avoid overdoing anything and get plenty of rest as you learn. Remember not to work if you’re in pain and always lift the correct amount of weight with the correct number of repetitions for maximum results.

Natural Bodybuilding Advice, No Sleep, No Gain

December 25th, 2008 by Ricardo d Argence

Going to to the gym, you will think you can get relaxed and muscles will grow by themselves. Working your muscles throught weight training is not the only factor, neither is physically working out.

One of the most overlooked elements involved is that you need to rest properly, not just between workouts, but actually get a good night’s rest at the end of the day. Changing around your sleep schedule so you get a solid and consistent night of rest, every night, can lead to big changes in the results you see from your bodybuilding program.

Sleep is crucial for successful bodybuilding for a several reasons. The body need sleep to recover and rebuild its muscle. This is the time when the other body parts are not using energy, or interior resources that the body uses to repair itself from the effects of bodybuilding.

Without enough of this quality rest, simply put, your body won’t have enough time or availability to repair old muscle and build new muscle. You will be severely inhibiting your gains by not allowing your muscles to heal, mend and grow properly.

Sleep is critical for body builders because without it you may have difficulty focusing and become lethargic. A lack of mental focus can destroy your results while you’re in the gym. It doesn’t matter how motivated you are, if you can’t focus in what you have to do, you will not get the results you want.

Then at the same time, you may not even have the physical energy or motivation required to get a good weightlifting session in to begin with. There’s only so much your body can handle over the course of a day with a tiny amount of sleep. And after, work, school, family commitments and anything else you may be dealing with, working out to your full potential is often what remains undone.

Finally, the unseen reason why sleep is so important for great bodybuilding results is that sleeping restores and maintains a natural rhythm with your body’s hormones. Sleeping releases some hormones into your bloodstream that are essential for proper metabolism and muscle gain. At the same time, sleep also inhibits other hormones that can lead to fat gain and other unseemly consequences.

That means that sleeping for 2 hours on friday night and then sleeping for 12 hours on saturday night doesn’t amount to the same benefits as sleeping 7 hours both nights in a row of no matter what you want to maintain a consistent sleep schedule. And that’s what you should shoot for, at least 7 hours a night. You must sleep if you want to succed at bodybuilding under any circumstance.
